For the nongeeks among us, watching HBO’s sprawling new fantasy drama “Game of Thrones” is the epic TV version of trying to sort out the Middle East. That doesn’t make it a bad show, and certain elements like the production can be savored by all. It does mean that those of us not already steeped in the mythology of this particular world, or fascinated by the mythology of fictional new worlds, will be gasping just to sort out the lineups. When you’re three episodes into a series and still unsure which member of which family holds which nominal role in which ruling household, you may start asking whether the effort is worth the payback. It’s also probably worth mentioning that sometimes “Game of Thrones” moves as slowly as a large army on foot and horseback inching its way across a bleak, endless, overcast Northern plain.
Thanks presumably to the good queen’s parenting skills, his heir Joffrey (Jack Gleeson) is spoiled and nasty, with little of his father’s basic sense of decency. To help keep the kingdom together, Robert enlists his old friend Lord Eddard Stark (Sean Bean), whose formal title is Warden of the North. Ned Stark is married to a better woman, Lady Catelyn (Michelle Fairley), and they have five children of varying though generally sound moral fiber. Listing the rest of the cast and their affiliations would require a special edition of the paper, though it’s worth noting that Peter Dinklage stands out as Tyrion Lannister, Queen’s Cersei’s troubled but wise brother. A large cast naturally makes some characters expendable, so “Game of Thrones” has a fairly high body count as well as graphic language and nudity. Oh, and dire wolves. It has dire wolves. Never underestimate dire wolves. Even if it takes a few episodes to understand them.
The project comes from Tom Hanks’ Playtone Company, which recently wrapped up the final season of Big Love. While famed cinematographer (and first-time writer) Robert Richardson and Neil Gaiman himself will co-write the pilot together. What say you?! Game of Thrones, HBO’s epic, sprawling adaptation of science-fiction author George R.R. Martin’s exhaustive -and occasionally exhausting -A Song of Ice and Fire series, is a triumph of storytelling. It’s almost impossible to compress a novel, especially one as rich in detail as Martin’s, into TV’s small dimensions. And yet screenwriters David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, and versatile TV directors Tim Van Patten and Alan Taylor -both veterans of HBO’s The Sopranos, a vastly different series, in tone and feel -have done just that.
The first words aren’t spoken for nearly five minutes; after a brief conversation full of worried glances and darting looks to the shadows, the silence returns. What happens next is something that looks and feels like something out of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy. This isn’t TV; it’s feature filmmaking, writ large for TV’s small screen. “There’s a war coming,” a character warns, in Game of Thrones’ second hour. “I don’t know when, and I don’t know who we will be fighting, but it’s coming.” TV has one advantage over feature films: time. Time to tell a complicated story over several weeks, months -years, even. There’s a richness of story detail here that not even a three-hour movie can equal. And when it’s done well -and Game of Thrones is done very well indeed, at times -the effect is special. The story is too rich and complex to recount here, and it would spoil much of the surprise and joy of discovery, in any event.
